Flash! Bang!

I’m dying for a thunderstorm. Here in Stockholm, we don’t get many of those. The weather just isn’t extreme enough. And that’s one of the things I miss the most about summer. We get a few at the beginning – usually in May or June. But just enough that I only need one had to count them. And they aren’t the boomers that we get back home in NJ. The ones that make your windows shake.

I love thunderstorms. To the point where I almost want to run out and stand in one. (I wouldn’t though. I’m not THAT stupid). I love the excitement I get from them. I love to just sit at my window and watch the lightning and count until I hear the thunder.

I wrote a story once in my creative writing class in high school that used a thunderstorm to convey the main characters growing hope in the situation she was in. My teacher thought it was interesting because thunderstorms are usually symbolic of chaos and tragedy.

I guess what she didn’t realize is that after a storm like that it’s always so peacful, and the air is always much nicer to breathe, and the world just seems to glow around you. How could there not be hope in that?

  1. I agree. Thunderstorms are such fun. We only get them rarely here in the UK.
There just something about it… The electricity in the air, and (if you’re outside) the knowledge that you are going to get soaked to the skin…
Anyway, just thought I’d say thanks for commenting on my blog. I’ve been very lax in responding to everyone…
Sure we’ll bump into each other on BE soon.

  2. I’m a storm freak and we get some goodies here in Kansas. Still haven’t had any good ones yet this year though. I love the severe ones and I get a big thrill when we are in a Tornado watch. And I WILL go out and stand in it. Yep, I’m looney :P

  3. Unlike the other ‘comment’ators, i dont find any interest in thunderstorms. During monsoon there are enough of those thunderstorms out here in India. But i’ve always disliked them cause they stopped my outdoor games. And they have the tendency to mess up the streets. But seeing ur views, i think i should try seeing them from your viewpoint. Will do that and let you know.:)

  4. I love storms. I loved when we went camping in a storm. As we lay on the ground inside our tent with the raining pouring down, we’d see flashes of light streaking the sky and then the earth would rumble as the thunder rolled. It was awesome. Some of my most favorite memories are being stuck in a tent with my best friend giggling because we were scared but having so much fun as well!!

  5. Here in Florida, we get more than our share of thunderstorms. They’re OK as long as they don’t make us lose electricity & I don’t have to drive in them. I hate how idiots drive in the rain.

  6. I lived in S. FL for 5 years. We got some fabulous t-storms. Once, a lightning bolt hit just outside my garage. It was amazing…the hair on the back of my neck stood. Very weird, feeling the power and electricity of it.

  7. We recently had a storm here in Florida, and I took my three-year-old son out onto the porch, and held him as we listened to the rain and the thunder. It was quite interesting to watch the look on his face change from one of fear to one of awe and wonder.

Too soon in life we lose the awe and wonder.

  8. Great post. I always get a “charge” in a thunderstorm. Being enclosed and inside but a part of it too. Great drawing too.

  9. I love thunderstorms too. We get a wonderful view of the lightning from our house, so I like to sit and watch it out the window too. I love your illustrations!

  10. I’m from Guam. Lots of thunderstorms, lightening…and typhoons. We’re used to it, though. Enjoyed reading your blog.

  11. I’m sorry to hear that you’re missing them, but if it makes you feel any better, Jersey’s been lacking in them this year, too. :)
