There! In the sky!

Wednesday, May 11th, 2005

Last night, while at a late and very long meeting, I glanced out of the window to take in the city. It was around 8pm, and the sun had just set. I had intended to just look over the buildings and perhaps read the time and temperature off that that huge digital clock a ways into the city, when something caught my eye…

… the hot air balloons are back!

This is one of the many things I love about Stockholm. Every year, spring to fall, hot air balloons fill up the evening sky. As long as the weather is good, you’ll see them every day. It’s so enchanting. They always make me catch my breath.

When the wind is right they’ll fly south of the city, right over where I live. Sometimes I don’t even notice until I hear the roar of the fire being lit to heat them up. And then I run to the window and just watch as they pass overhead.

Sometimes I go out and follow them by foot for quite a while.

Last year was such an awfully cold and rainy summer, they weren’t flying so often. Hopefully this year’s summer will be much nicer, allowing hot air balloons to dot the sky every evening.

I’d love to ride in one but they are insanely expensive. But maybe it would be worth the money one day, and see my beautiful city in a way I never have before.

  1. yer, they’re pretty cool, nice pic

  2. You definetly should, even if just once. How about saving up from now until the end of summer. Then treat you both to a nice hot air balloon ride. :)

  3. Hot air balloons are things that I don’t think I’d ever see in Hong Kong (they’d probably get caught or crash into tall buildings and everything…). You should definitely go on one, as Paul suggested. Maybe a romantic trip with the loved one? ;) P.S. This “illo” is very beautifully drawn (drawn? done? made? what’s the word? :S)

  4. Wow - that would be a wonderful sight! I can’t imagine that at all. You should definitely go on it, then you could look at your house from the opposite perspective :)

  5. I’ve never seen a hot air balloon. I’d love to go in one but I’m afraid of heights…

  6. I love those too… It’s a shame we don’t see those there in Puerto Rico.

  7. Those are indeed super nice to see. I do remember them, where I used to live in Stockholm I could see them too, I lived on top of a hill so they came pretty close. I once flew in one of those. It’s super mega nice, it’s really worth the money. Kram, -TheLoneCodeman-
