I did the illustration in color, which I think turned out pretty cool, but then I started to play around with it. And when I got to the one above I just stopped and thought “This is it!” It makes me think of the Wizard of Oz, when the tornado was coming to get Dorothy’s house.
I’ve always been intensely fascinated by tornadoes. So much that they have been popping into my dreams quite often for as long as I can remember. The most recent one was 2 nights ago. In that particular dream I it was approaching me on my walk to the subway, and the sky was a bright pink and purple. And I remember running around trying to gather up everyone I loved. I don’t quite remember what happens after, though. Anyway, that’s why I decided to do this illo.
I’ve never seen one in real life. I’m from New Jersey and we don’t have them there. It happens, but very rarely. And here, in Sweden, even less so. I am grateful for that, they are very frightening! But I really would love to see one… from a safe distance of course
In the meantime, I can watch extremely cool videos of them, like this one. I realize they cause terrible destruction and ruin lives, of course. But you can’t deny that nature is sometimes most captivating to watch (from afar) when it’s at its most destructive.

Ooooh, I love it. It’s kinda spooky looking. We have tornadoes here in MD sometimes but not very often!
Holy Cow! I have been having tornado dreams my whole life, pretty much the same kind you described… and I too am fascinated by them, although I live in So. Cal. Veddy interesting. This image is absolutely awesome!!! It the stuff tornado dreams are made of!
I like the scale of it Greenie; nice touch with the windmill shadowing the house, it really does give the impression of massive trouble heading in your direction.
You can come hang out with me in Texas and maybe you will see one! Beautiful illo! Love the colors!
I Love Tornadoes… T and I are fascinated by them and watch shows on them all the time. The first monsoon season we had here, we had a tornado blow through our community about a 100′ from our house. It was small, but it was destructive. It knocked down cinder block walls, ripped tiles off roofs, threw debris through windows and even slammed a parked car into a garage door. T and I just happened to be out on the back patio when it hit. If there had been a camera on us, you probably would’ve laughed your ass off… we heard this very loud high pitched whistle and then saw the swirling debris… we both just froze with our mouths hanging wide open & eyes bugged out! Of course, out here in AZ they try to pooh pooh it and call them Micro Bursts but, T and I know what we saw and heard… and it was awesome!!!
Oh… lol forgot… love the illo!!! It’s quite beautiful… My dream disasters always seem to be massive tidal waves… weird, eh?
